Buying Guide

Where do I buy from?

Mobile phones are available through a variety of channels. You can buy direct from the networks, in the high street or online. Or you can visit a reseller, either online or on the high street. The high street is great if you prefer to gather information in person and like to get to know your phone close up before you buy, but there are also downsides. You'll get less choice in the shops, find it less convenient to compare all the phones, networks and deals available and you'll come under the inevitable pressure to buy from the sales staff. Whereas, online you can do all your research under no pressure and all from the comfort of your own home. Plus you'll get competitive pricing and special online offers of great prices or extra services (additional texts or downloads etc.) that you won't find in the shops.

So now you've worked out how to investigate what's on offer........ what's next?

Which network?

There are several networks to choose from. There are 4 main networks that have been around in the UK for some time; the two original and largest, Vodafone & O2, plus Orange and T-Mobile. These four "2nd generation" networks offer up to 99.7% "population coverage" but you might still find you struggle for signal in remote areas. Vodafone and O2 still provide both the best coverage and have less connection problems in built up areas due to the signal frequencies they use. Orange and T-mobile lag slightly behind.

There are also virtual networks such as Virgin Mobile, who offer different tariffs & services but run on technology provided by, in this instance, T-Mobile.

Finally there is 3G. 3G networks allow the transmission of both voice and data. This allows for additionally services to be provided such as video calling, web, email and games. The first provider was the network 3. Coverage for 3G services is significantly less than 2G networks, but voice calls can still be made over existing 2G networks when out of 3G range. Vodafone 3G services will have 80% population coverage in 2007 & will be up to 4 times faster on their new HSDPA network.

So, you need to decide if you want just voice and text services or additional 3G services on your phone. Once you know what you want it's best to talk to family and friends about network coverage in your area to establish which network will be best for you.

OK - still with us? Good, then lets move on. Only the small matter of which phone and what price plan to go! Which order you select these in says something about what you want. Are you interested in the handset, how it looks and what features it has? Or more interested in the price plan - how many texts and cross network minutes can you get for your money? Price plans and handsets are often tied together. To get through this you'll need to have an idea of what's most important to you.

Which phone?

What are you looking for in a phone? There are plenty of options to choose from. Here’s some of the main things you’ll need to consider:

· Style – are you happy with a one piece phone, or would you like a slider? Maybe a clam phone or an ultra lightweight and slim line little number?
· Branding – Are you happy with a manufacturers phone or do you want a designer brand like the Dolce and Gabbana from Motorola?
· Battery Life - An important consideration to avoid disappointment. Check user reviews and ask around about performance to avoid feeling “run down”……
· Camera – How important is a camera and how good does it need to be. You can get up to 7 mega pixels on a phone these days!
· Music Player - Are you using the phone as an MP3 player? Does it have a radio? What about memory restrictions? How many songs will it take? Does it come with headphones? If you’re a traveller does the phone have a flight mode? You can listen to your tunes without causing navigational errors and major crash!
· 2G or 3G – Just voice and text messaging or do you want video calls, games, emails, internet and much more? What about network coverage for 3G in your area? Don’t forget to ask around.
· Can the phone be used abroad? – Not all international networks are the same. You’ll need to decide if you want your phone to work overseas and where you are going. But don’t worry, you can hire phones when you land at your destination at most large airports these days.
· Memory – You’ll need memory for tunes and pictures. Phones come with good memory and with card slots for up to 4 Gb of additional memory. Make sure you get enough and plan for the cost of a memory card if you need one.
· Infrared / Bluetooth – Do you want a blue tooth headset so you can talk on the go? Or maybe want to update your phone through your infrared laptop connection?
· Games – get a java enabled phone to allow for some serious 3D gaming fun on the rally course. Or are you happy with 2D chess?

Understanding what you want from a phone before making a purchasing decision is essential, including which network to go with. Visit the Vodafone shop for Vodafone only deals, the O2 shop for O2 only deals and the Orange shop for Orange only deals.

So remember to consider what features you are looking for and check the phone spec before you buy.
